Kentucky Derby Mint Julep

Today marks the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby, which is also considered the fastest two minutes in sports.  I had the opportunity to visit Churchill Downs in 2007 for the 133rd running of the Derby, in which The Queen also was in attendance!  One of my University of Michigan field hockey teammates grew up in Lousiville and invited a group of teammates to attend with her.  It was an incredible weekend that brought tons of memories–from shopping for the perfect hat and outfit to seeing The Queen to placing bets (obviously based on the jockeys’ silks), and of course drinking the signature cocktail, the Mint Julep.  Just a few facts about the Mint Julep include:

  • It has been the Derby’s official cocktail for over 80 years
  • Over 120,000 Mint Juleps are served annually during Derby weekend
  • 1,000 pounds of fresh mint is required to make these Juleps
  • 60,000 pounds of ice is required to make these Juleps

Today I have a Mint Julep recipe for you which is a simpler recipe than I originally thought!  Check out the picture of me below, then craft this cocktail for the perfect addition to watching the Derby!
