I am slightly obsessed with reality cooking shows. Food, fire, elimantions, what could be better (other than me getting to taste the food?!) Top Chef (which just started a new season this week), Top Chef Masters, Iron Chef, Chopped, The Next Food Network Star, Masterchef, you name them, I probably watch it! But, I was a little apprehensive to watch the newest addition to the reality cooking shows, Masterchef Junior! Were these chefs going to be making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, boiling water and adding pasta, and adding some sprinkles and melted chocolate to ice cream and calling them dishes? Um, definitely no! These pint sized chefs, aged 8-13, are forces to be reckoned with! The competitors were split into 3 groups, each group having to make a dish from a different food category. The categories were seafood, dessert, and HOMEMADE pasta. Some of the dishes created were crab cakes in garlic and celery seed aioli, sushi, fish tacos with homemade tortillas, pumpkin ravioli, gnocchi with tomato sage cheese sauce, chocolate molten lava cake, vanilla bean pistachio macaroons, and truffles! These challenges were not simplified just because the chefs are younger! Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and Joe Bastianich even agree that some of the dishes put out by the junior chefs are better than the adult versions put out in the seasons before!
I typically multi-task while watching TV, but these junior chefs kept me fully focused, while my mouth was on the floor in awe of what they can cook and bake.
And, they are already thinking down the line. One saying that he wants to win because the $100,000 prize money will help him open a restaurant, and another would like to win to put the money toward culinary school. And, yet another wants to become a food critic!
Today, on the daytime talk show “Katie,” the next Julia Child could be actually be child! Meet two of the pint-sized chefs from “MasterChef Junior” and watch them face-off in a competition judged by Chef Joe Bastianich and Katie. Tune-in to see who wins!
